It’s Time To Leap Into Action

This year, there’s a double Valentine’s opportunity both for lovers and those with goods to sell that may appeal to the star-crossed.

On 29th February 2012 many women may take advantage of the old leap year tradition to propose marriage to their slow-to-commit boyfriends. Also, to avoid this happening, men who want to take charge may leap in first and propose around Valentine’s Day.

If the woman proposes, she may perhaps want to present her new fiancé with a ring or some other piece of jewellery to seal the deal. The man proposing may want to have a ring ready in his pocket too.

And whoever does the proposing, there’s a whole lot of preparation for the most romantic occasion of your life so far – a Vivienne Westwood dress or a Kenzo Homme suit perhaps, so you look your best. Then there’s a Chanel bag and Christian Louboutin shoes to go with the dress, and perhaps candelabra, appropriate romantic music and movies and something to play them on.

We’re no experts in romance or relationships, but we’re pretty good on spotting retail trends and we know that the kinds of goods that should sell well in the next three weeks include:

• Designer suits and slinky dresses – the kind that make you feel good about yourself.
• Accessories to go with said outfits – designer bags like Hermes, Burberry and Gucci and shoes by names like Louboutin, Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik.
• Jewellery – specifically rings, especially solitaire diamonds, but all gemstones are popular for engagement rings these days.
• Men’s jewellery – this leap year it could be a good time to sell a Rolex watch, diamond cufflinks, men’s gold chains or rings.
• Romantic music and movie collections.
Don’t overlook other potential romantic gifts too, for those not proposing but simply looking for a Valentine’s gift:
• First or early edition books
• Romantic or erotic art
• Other jewellery, particularly watches and anything with diamonds
• Crystal or fine china vases that will hold either a single or a dozen red roses

And once all these couples are newly engaged they’re going to start planning the wedding, so if you spent a small fortune on a wedding dress by Vera Wang or Amanda Wyatt and you’re ready to turn it into cash to be used to furnish the nursery, or to fund a second honeymoon, take it to the dry cleaner’s now, so we can list it for you at the beginning of March in time for the summer wedding rush.

So happy hunting in your cupboards, drawers and attics. Let us turn something you never look at from one year to the next into a symbol of true love and devotion for someone else. Then you can treat yourself and your loved ones with the proceeds. Everyone’s a winner.

Why It Feels Great To Hit A Rating Milestone

We’re pretty pleased this week. We’ve just topped a feedback rating of 90,000, which means our clients like us. Rather a lot. Hooray!

It’s the kind of ranking that means a lot to us – it’s the People’s Choice award, rather than the Oscar. The ranking of an eBay seller is based on feedback from its actual customers. Every month eBay performs calculations with all the feedback left and compares it to the last 12 months. In most cases, sellers receive +1 point for each positive comment and -1 point for each negative comment left about them. Our current 90,000 score earns us a purple star next to our listing name. When we top 100,000 we’ll get a red star. It’s like school all over again – just as exciting but a bit more important.

You can’t expect every customer to take the time to give feedback, so our current ranking represents us having sold around 150,000 items. And if 90,000 of those people not only had a positive experience, but bothered to share that, then we’re hopeful we’re working on the right lines. Our feedback is 99.8% positive, so that’s just two customers in every thousand who weren’t entirely happy. (We hope those two perhaps didn’t realise we offer full refunds before they left their feedback.)

Not that we’re complacent. On eBay you’re only as good as your last transaction and every customer’s feedback is given the same weighting, whether they’ve spent 99p or thousands of pounds. It’s a great way to keep a business focussed on its customers. So we’re working hard here behind the scenes all the time to improve.

We hope to unveil our new website in the next few weeks, and then we hope you’ll be able to see us in action on a new TV show in the Spring.

Till then, a huge thank you so much to everyone who’s left feedback for us. It really helps us to shape the business.

How To Unwrap Your Christmas Presents

Am I taking the joy out of the festive season for you? I’m sorry. But it’s not so Bah Humbug when it comes round to next Christmas or the one after that, and you’re upgrading your hardware, your kids have grown out of their expensive toys, and you’re keen to make some money back on the old stuff before you buy new.

Here are my top tips for keeping used items in great re-sellable condition:

1. Keep the packaging.

This is the number 1 school-boy error people make, especially with things given as presents, when the opening frenzy and the mess of cardboard at home can be distracting. Have a large box or a washing basket in the room when the gifts are opened and put all the packaging into it. Even keep the little metal twisty ties that hold things in place in the box.

If you’re giving things to kids who might tear the packaging, perhaps open it before wrapping, put in the batteries, put the instruction manual somewhere safe, and then wrap. The kids prefer stuff ready to go anyway.

When you’ve got all your packaging together, put it in the loft and thank yourself for massively increasing the resale value of your item when the time comes.

2. Don’t damage the packaging while you’re removing it.

If you start out with the best intentions to keep the packaging, it’s frustrating when the box gets ripped anyway! Use scissors or a craft knife for opening boxes that have been stuck with sellotape or sticky fixing circles.

3. Keep the instructions.

You need these when they’re new anyway, but have a box where you keep all manuals and instruction pamphlets so you can reunite them with the box when you’re reselling.

4. Keep the receipt and send off the warranty.

A shocking percentage of warranties are never activated because people lose the card you have to send in or can’t find the receipt number when they try to register later. Make it a habit. Register for your warranty immediately – mostly you can do it online. Then if you get a certificate back through the post file it. It can really add to the resale value of your item.

5. Find a place for the new stuff.

I know this is the hardest part, but if everything has its own space in your home it’s less likely to be damaged so will have a higher resale value when the time comes. If you don’t have space for it, perhaps have a clear out and sell some unwanted items – either through Stuff U Sell or if they’re lower value items, at a car boot sale or even just giving them to charity. Having space to enjoy your new things will make it easier to take care of them.
