Oxfam Wedding Auction Success

We’ve really enjoyed helping Oxfam to run their first ever online weddings auction on eBay this month. Leading bridal blog www.lovemydress.net persuaded top wedding suppliers to donate nearly 100 one-off gifts, which we listed on eBay and dispatched to the lucky bidders. The generosity of the suppliers and bidders raised an amazing £38,091 for Oxfam Unwrapped, which provides help and relief for people in emergency situations. Thanks so much to everyone.

You can read some really touching stories on www.lovemydress.net/blog/ of how the money will be spent and how the brides and grooms who bid were really inspired by such a good cause. Here’s just a taster from that article of how buying your wedding dress on eBay can be even more exciting than getting it on the high street:

Nina, from East London won her pick of any Rachel Simpson shoes. Within 10 minutes of winning the auction, she’d already emailed to say which ones she was after.

“In the throes of wedding planning, it’s easy to forget that there are thousands of people all over the world, literally living hand-to-mouth in poverty; suddenly the colour of your organza chair sashes don’t seem so important! I was absolutely delighted to win the bid for a pair of Rachel Simpson shoes and I can wear them with pride on my wedding day, knowing they have contributed to such a worthy cause…”

Chloe Orchin won any dress from the Vintage Wedding Dress Company up to £3000!

“Standing in front of a mirror having tried on a Vintage Wedding Dress Company frock at the National Wedding show, I just knew that this dress was ‘the one’. My excited entourage of girlfriends were nodding in approval and I had proper weddingy excitement for the first time since I got engaged just before Christmas. That excitement soon fizzled away after the lovely sales assistant slipped me a piece of paper with the dress price on it. It was completely out of my price range and I just couldn’t justify spending that much money on myself when I had marquees to be booking and friends and family to be feeding! I searched high and low for a second hand version, but to no avail…”

“It was only on Tuesday evening when I was getting my daily post-work fix of Love My Dress that I stumbled upon the Oxfam auction on eBay. When I read the Vintage Wedding Dress Company’s incredible offer, I couldn’t click the “bid” button fast enough. I thought about it all day on Wednesday (my mind really should have been on teaching year 9 Shakespeare) and I couldn’t get home fast enough to watch the auction unfold. When that last second ticked away and I found out that I had won, I was just thrilled. I think that everyone in the staff room at work the next day were almost as excited! A huge thank you to the amazingly generous team at the Vintage Wedding Dress Company and to Oxfam for the incredible work you do and for organising such a unique online event.

I can’t tell you how much this means to me – you’ve made this blushing bride to be very happy.”

Apart from some of the Vintage dresses, all the dresses and shoes in the Oxfam auction were brand new, but there’s a huge market for once-worn designer wedding dresses in good condition, as-new designer shoes and especially for tiaras, headdresses and veils, which tend to retain their pristine appearance.

What Sells On eBay?

So what might make some money on eBay? Well, your bridal gown is more likely to hold its value if it was a designer or vintage piece. According to bridal magazine You And Your Wedding, the average wedding dress cost £977 in 2011. If you chose an own label dress from a high street store like Debenhams or Monsoon that cost £100 – £200 you probably will not make back the majority of the sale price. Because these labels can be bought relatively cheaply brand new there isn’t really the market to drive prices up to their original cost on eBay. That said, it’s still worth listing them if you do it quickly after your wedding, as someone may have set their heart on a particular style which is now sold out.

Pricing

If you went the designer route and spent thousands, however, there’s potential to recoup much more of your initial outlay. As a guide, it’s good to start at about 50% of the original selling cost. This is around the wholesale price of designer gowns, so if you’re competing with bridal stores trying to sell off their end of range or last season dresses, you’ll be selling at around the same ballpark prices.

Attention To Detail

Because wedding dresses can cost so much, brides are prepared to do a lot of research into their favourite styles. Many will have visited stores to try on dresses and noted down the particular style number, material shade and size, intending then to search for the exact same dress more cheaply online or at a discount sale. For this reason it’s important to prepare your dress properly before listing it. If you can’t remember the exact style number contact the shop where you bought it – they often keep detailed records or might be able to identify it from a photograph. If you have your original receipt this can help too as it may include a description and there are quite specific terms used in wedding fashion, such as for the length of the train or the exact colour of the material.

There are lots of designer brands in this market, but some that sell particularly well include Claire Pettibone, Charlotte Balbier, Sassi Holford, Tammam, Nicki Macfarlane, Ian Stuart, Amanda Wyatt, Jenny Packam, and Sally Lacock.

Be Honest

It’s not necessary to have your dress dry cleaned, as many brides will want to do this again anyway to remove the creases involved in transit, but you must not state that it’s been cleaned if it hasn’t. For the designer dresses, it’s probably worth the investment in cleaning to be able to present your dress at its best both in the photographs and when the new bride receives it. You don’t want her to be disappointed and ask for a refund. For this reason it’s really important to be absolutely honest about any damage, marks, how often it’s been worn, and where it’s been stored.

Returns

We always offer no quibble refunds on all our items, but if you’re selling independently, be careful to list your terms for refunds carefully. We’ve heard of people selling a wedding dress, only to have it returned a week later as ‘not as described’, when clearly it had been worn to a wedding in the elapsed week!

How To Photograph Your Wedding Dress

When it comes to displaying your dress in the photographs, do try to have it on either a mannequin or a person. It’s much better to photograph the dress hanging on a human form, not flat on a table or on a hanger. It won’t look its best and other sellers who do this may entice your buyer away. If you have the permission of your wedding photographer you could use a professional photo of you wearing the dress, and crop your face off or blur it out. Take photos too of the label to prove it’s the designer name the bride is looking for, and of any detailing like lace, beading, buttons, layers of the skirt, and make sure there are front and back view shots. It’s worth paying any extra eBay fees to show multiple photos when it’s for a dress of this value and detail.

Posting A Wedding Dress

If your dress has a big skirt or a long train don’t be tempted to squish it into a parcel to post to your buyer. It will be crushed and could be damaged. Use a very clean spacious box and consider using a specialist courier who can deliver it quickly so it’s not crushed up for too long. The bride will be happy to pay a little more to receive her dress in good condition and you have the added security of being able to track the delivery. For legal and safety reasons it’s also safer for you as a purchaser to post an item after payment has cleared rather than asking for collection in person and taking cash or cheque from an unknown buyer at your own home.

Buy From eBay Or From Oxfam

And if you’re buying a dress rather than selling, though of course we recommend buying a wedding dress on eBay for the sheer variety and the likelihood of you getting an excellent price, we’d also like to tip you off that Oxfam has an online bridal shop and a UK network of bridal stores. Many altruistic designers donate store and catwalk samples, end of line unworn gowns and the public also donate once-worn dresses. It’s a great place to find a beautiful dress and know you’re helping a great cause too.

The trend towards all things vintage has been building for a few years, but we wonder if the current 1950s vintage zeitgeist has been fuelled by this summer’s Diamond jubilee. News reels of the 1952 coronation seem to have captured the imagination of editors, TV producers and designers everywhere.

Look at any interiors, design or fashion magazine this spring and you’ll find pages of pictures depicting a romanticised summer from the 1950s. Ladies in sticky-out frocks with frighteningly hairsprayed curls and rigid pointy boobs wear floral frilly aprons to serve tea in bone china tea cups with saucers. There is an abundance of linen: floral, lacy and embroidered tablecloths, napkins and even tray cloths are making a big comeback. (Did you know that the modern ‘tea towel’ is so called because it’s the right size to cover a tray on which you’re about to serve afternoon tea – it’s really a mini tablecloth, not for wiping the odd posh glass that can’t go through the dishwasher.)

And the 1950s vibe has spread to the food we’re eating too. There’s so much baking! Be it cupcakes, ‘artisan’ bread, and even pies, we’re now encouraged by every magazine and TV chef to return to the kinds of food we romantically believe our grandmothers served up to their young families on a scrubbed pine or oak kitchen table, wearing the aforementioned frilly pinny.

So what does this penchant for all things 1950s mean to us, the interested eBayer?

It’s twofold. If you want to get the vintage look for yourself or your home, you’ll find it easier to browse by buying vintage fashion on eBay rather than going on foot to vintage emporiums or fairs. As a bonus, you’re likely to find a real 1950s original piece, which will set you apart from the crowd buying 1950s-style reproductions on the high street.

Secondly, if you happen to be sitting beneath a loft-full of your grandma’s old wedding china, glassware and tea cloths, now could be the perfect moment to dust if off and get it valued.

We’ve explained in previous blogs that in general terms you can expect to get a higher return on used goods on eBay than by selling direct to a dealer. It’s logical really: By using eBay you’ve opened out your market internationally. You not only hit all the people who didn’t get up and come to the antiques fair today, you’ve also hit all the Americans and South East Asians who just love all that quaint English vintage stuff. Plus, you’ve cut out the middle man. Yes, eBay and PayPal take their cut (as do merchants like us if you use one), but generally these companies’ overheads combined are less than those of a dealer with a physical shop to run who needs to turn a profit. Therefore, as a seller, there’s often more margin in the end sale for you on eBay.

The drawback of an online sale is that you may have to wait a few days, or even a few weeks to get your money. You may want to set a reserve on your item, and if you start setting that too high, you may have to relist the item. In any case, you’ll have to wait for as long as your auction runs – typically 5 or 7 days to get maximum exposure.

We’ve been screaming at the TV watching the recent Channel 4 series Get Your House In Order, where the expert dealer has carted people’s valuable goods off to a market or a second-hand store and allowed them to go for peanuts in a job lot, just to get money quickly. We’ve helped some of the participants of the show to sell some of their collectable or valuable items more slowly on eBay and they’re still seeing the money roll in now. With vintage items which may be either unique or rare, it’s logical to expose them to a wider market for a longer time to get the best possible price.

So – what’s hot in vintage right now?

As with any period, designer names sell better than unknowns and condition is important too.

The baking and 1950s cooking trend means original

At the smaller end of the scale, crockery and bakewear are also selling well. Tea sets and cake stands are likely to do especially well as people prepare for retro Jubilee street parties, and as ever, names sell better: look out for makers’ marks like Royal Worcester, Royal Doulton, Wade, and Wedgewood. If you have a complete tea set with teapot (rarer as the spouts and handles often get chipped), you’ll get a good price from a collector, but don’t discount smaller sets. It’s currently very fashionable to create a ‘harlequin’ tea set from trios that don’t necessarily match. A trio is a tea cup, saucer and plate, which currently sells for around £5 to £10 – more for a good name or a rare pattern – florals are particularly popular.

As ever, vintage fashion tends to hold its price much better than high street fashion. You’ll notice lots of high-street imitations of 1950s style clothing this season, but wouldn’t it be better to invest in a classic vintage piece that you can sell on when you want something new? Thanks to the popularity of Mad Men, wiggle dresses are very saleable, and the classic 1950s swing dress is also popular as it’s a little more forgiving to wear. If your mum had one and it doesn’t fit you, why not sell it while the market’s keen and use the money to buy something you’ll look great in at your Jubilee street party. Handbags, jewellery and still-boxed stockings are also good vintage items that will sell on eBay.

Lastly, we’ve noticed a trend for statement design items which are being sold perhaps more for their intrinsic beauty than as functioning objects. The Bakelite telephones on a recent episode of Get Your House In Order; are a good example. They’re selling on eBay from around £30 to over £300 for a rare one. Many are being sold around the £100 mark. We’re not sure if people are actually preferring to sit down to make their telephone calls or if these are just there to look gorgeous. Either way, if you’ve got one, it’s a good time to get it valued.

We’ve also recently listed some vintage typewriters, and we’ve seen vintage mixers that we doubt will be used in actual baking, but which would look great on display in a cafe or a large kitchen. Original 1950s glass bottles are even selling well – some for over £10 for a bottle that originally held milk. If you think it’s vintage, someone somewhere may give it a value, so dig it out and do some research online!

BBC’s The Antiques Roadshow recently asked for those with Royal memorabilia to be involved in a special programme in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this summer. It asked: “Do you have a family memento or treasured souvenir from a meeting with royalty? Perhaps your great great grandmother was lady in waiting to Queen Victoria? Or maybe your links with royalty stretch further back in time?”

Experts in antiques and collectables agree that this summer’s celebrations are likely to make objects connected to Her Majesty more desirable to trade than at any other time in her reign. We have already been approached by some collectors who see now as a good time to part with their Coronation memorabilia. Perhaps now is the time to sort through your own cupboards and particularly boxes that formerly belonged to older relatives, to see if you have any royal memorabilia that would sell on eBay.

As the Antiques Roadshow suggests, the items likely to sell for the highest value will be those with a personal story and a provenance. If your relative really did work in one of the royal households and you have a hand-written Christmas card signed by the Queen, or even a hastily written note that’s signed by a member of the Royal family, now may be a good time to bring it to market. The Diamond Jubilee will increase interest in all things connected to The Queen herself, but also in other members of the family.

On eBay as I write, there’s a note written by the late Princess Diana to her chef, Mervyn Wycherly. It claims to have the traceable provenance of coming from a known collection of letters and notes sold by Mr Wycherly at auction some years ago, and is listed with a starting bid of £2,300. If you own any similar items and have a provable link from the original owner of the note or letter to the royal person in question, you could make a good sale in the next few months.

But it doesn’t have to be a whole letter or even a note to be of interest to collectors. Signed photographs are highly collectable, as are Christmas cards. Writing in Spear’s Wealth Management Survey, Godfrey Barker, explains that, “Photographs and wartime Christmas cards of Elizabeth and Margaret as princesses are especially rare and desirable (notably images by Marcus Adams and Cecil Beaton). Signed studio wedding photographs of 1947 and images of the Coronation year are also highly prized. The Queen’s Christmas cards are many and sell between £250 and £750 according to the fun or the historic importance of the photograph and the intimacy of the message. Those signed and inscribed with greetings by Autopen are of fractional value, while the Queen’s personally written signature, ‘Lilibet’, is a major bonus.”

If you’re thinking of selling a collection on eBay, or even considering what current memorabilia you might invest in for the future, there are some golden rules to consider. In general items with good quality photographs tend to sell better, as do those inscribed with a date and occasion. Items with a double collectible appeal also make a better investment over time, so go for china pieces made by a UK-based company with a good name, such as Royal Worchester, Spode or Royal Doulton. Items made of precious metals such as silver and gold will also sell particularly well in the current buoyant metals market, so if you have a silver ingot necklace commemorating the Queen’s 1977 Silver Jubilee, now is a good time to bring it out of the jewellery box.

A search on eBay today for memorabilia connected to the Queen and the Royal family will find you hundreds of items at fairly low prices. You can pick up a commemorative mug, coin or plate for little more than a pound. There are some such items that are more rare, and if they’re in excellent condition, preferably in their original packaging, they’ll sell for more. We spotted a particular black and white mug commemorating the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer for almost £40, but this is the exception. If you do have such items, do a Google search for similar pieces or give us a call and we’ll talk you through getting a valuation.

And when you’re searching for Royal memorabilia for sale on eBay, don’t dismiss fairly modern newspapers. If you saved the early editions of the papers on the day Princess Diana died, you could have an exceptionally collectable item. A collection of 4 such papers was recently offered for sale on eBay with an asking price of £3,300! Paper goods like souvenir brochures, postcards and newspapers can have a relatively high resale value if they’re in good condition purely because they are difficult to preserve. If your Grandma saved the newspaper supplement commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, now’s the perfect time to get it valued.

Experts agree that the kinds of memorabilia that are sold to commemorate Royal events don’t tend to give much return on your investment for around 40 – 50 years, unless they become exceptionally rare for some reason. The Fluck & Law Spitting Image character mugs, teapots and egg cups of various royals including Prince Charles are very collectable now, perhaps because they weren’t that attractive and so fewer people bought them to display.

However, this year’s Royal china, silverwear and gold items could make a great gift for a child who is born in the same year as the event, which may give them a modest nest-egg to sell in their own middle-age. Choose something that’s a limited edition if you can, buy British, and keep it absolutely intact with both original packaging and receipt. Save the newspaper from the day of the event and keep them all together in a box, preserved with non-acidic tissue paper. Include a hand-written note to commemorate the occasion too. You can imagine The Antiques Roadshow of the future enjoying the time-capsule element to this additional provenance, but mostly it will be of sentimental interest to the recipient, and that can’t be valued in pounds and pence.

If you wish to sell Royal memorabilia, gold and silver items or anything else you find in your loft while searching for the Royal items, give us a call on 0800 046 1100 or email stuffusell@stuffusell.co.uk.

At the beginning of March last year we were writing about how the iPad 2 would have a big impact on the market for used iPads. Now that the new iPad is here (or should that be the iPad 3?) what should you do with the old one?

Where’s Best To Sell: eBay
The most economically sound advice is that you should sell an iPad 2 on eBay. Of course we would say that, wouldn’t we, but the people at Mashable tech analysed the market for reselling iPads within 12 hours of the announcement of the new iPad launch, and they say the best prices are to be found on eBay. See their research article here. Last year The Observer’s Mark King analysed the market for selling used electronics like smart phones and laptops, comparing eBay to recycling websites that send you a cheque before reselling. He wrote that “In almost every category, consumers can sell their goods for greater sums on eBay than the prices quoted by recycling websites.”

Current eBay Prices:
So if you’re decided on eBay, what’s the next step?

It’s impossible for us to generalise and answer the question “how much will my iPad 2 go for on eBay?” as there are so many variations in memory capacity, connectivity and condition. One day after Apple’s announcement, Apple iPad 2 was offered on eBay for a minimum price of £299 for a used 16 GB model, to a minimum of £430 for a used 64GB model. The same models in new condition were offered at £369 for a 16 GB and £550 for a 64 GB model. On the same day on the Apple Store, a brand new Apple iPad 2 was priced from £329 and the new iPad from £399 for 16 GB, £479 for 32 GB and £559 for the 64 GB.

You can see from these prices that iPads do hold their value well, and we’re talking a high-value item to buy and sell. But be warned – these prices are apt to change.

When the iPad 2 come to the market last year, we saw a large number of iPads come up for sale on eBay and elsewhere as people started to upgrade to the iPad 2. This meant that although initially those who couldn’t afford a brand new iPad were very keen to snap up older models in good condition, the market did become full fairly quickly and so prices began to drop. With other Apple products we’ve noticed a 20% decrease in sales value 6 months after an upgrade has become available. We expect to see the same supply and demand mini economy evolve over the next few weeks, so it would pay to list your iPad or iPad 2 for sale now.

What condition is your iPad in?
Let’s assume that your iPad 2 is in as new condition and you’ve kept the original packaging. This kind of iPad 2 will, of course, command the greatest selling price in its memory category. If you have accessories to sell alongside the basic model this could tip a buyer into choosing you rather than another seller so have a root around in the loft for the original packaging and consider if you’re happy to part with accessories such as a case at the same time.

Buyers Look For Trusted Sellers
From our 8 years’ experience of selling on eBay we know that when it comes to the higher value items like these electronics, buyers are actually prepared to pay a slightly higher price to a trustworthy seller. It’s just like the off-line shopping experience: If you’re going to spend over £400 on an item you’d probably prefer to spend it in a shop and feel you had somewhere to go back to if there was a problem rather than buying something in cash at the carboot sale. So for these higher value items, you may command a higher price by using a trusted eBay merchant like ourselves to list it for you, plus there’s the bonus that we take all the hassle out of the sale for you. Please give us a call to discuss it – there’s no obligation to use us but we can talk you through the process.

Trust is just as important to you as a seller. Make sure you’re happy with how the transaction is going and if you have concerns – e.g. emails asking for the transaction to be completed very quickly, contact eBay for help. This is a high value item, so you need to take appropriate precautions on the transaction. Don’t release the iPad until the funds have cleared in your account and it’s safest to ship it by a reputable carrier with a tracked delivery – don’t agree to hand it over in person.

So, in summary, our advice is that if you want to sell your older version iPads, you should:
a)	Get a higher sale price by selling on eBay rather than recycling “drop in the bag, we send you a cheque” websites
b)	List it for sale sooner rather than later before the market becomes saturated and prices start to fall
c)	Take appropriate precautions on the transaction as this is a high value item
d)	Consider using an eBay merchant to help you.

You can call us on 0800 046 1100, or email <a href=mailto:stuffusell@stuffusell.co.uk">stuffusell@stuffusell.co.uk and we really hope you’re enjoying your new iPad already.

As the warmer weather arrives, thoughts turn to the hoped for long, hot summer, and people start to look for garden equipment on eBay.

Now’s the perfect time to start thinking about all your outdoor equipment. Many of us may well be thinking of upgrading our gas barbeques, outdoor tables, chairs and sunshades.

If it’s going to be the long hot summer we’re currently predicted, including the possibility of being put in charge of barbequing for a Jubilee street party, now could well be the time to invest in newer equipment. But don’t consign your old gas barbie or other garden items to the dump. Others on slightly smaller budgets may well be glad to buy your old items, and it’s easier than you may think to sell stuff on eBay.

Likewise, your own children may have outgrown their outdoor toys but there may be lots of fun left in them for someone else. A good-quality trampoline, garden swimming pool or Wendy house is most likely to sell on eBay in the next few weeks as the weather improves and we head towards the Easter holidays. Check that the family’s bikes are still large enough too and if you no longer need the pullalong or child carrier, consider if it’s in good enough condition for someone else to use.

Also, Visit England continues to predict a bumper year for staycations and glamping. Even the cast of The Only Way Is Essex have done it, so we wouldn’t be surprised by a surge in the next month or so in demand for yurts, teepees, camping stoves and all the other paraphernalia that you just can’t live without when you get back to nature. If this kind of equipment is stopping your garage door from closing properly, now’s the moment to make some space.

Of course, we understand that it can be daunting selling large equipment on eBay. Working out the best way to ship heavy and bulky goods can be confusing and if you only list ‘collection in person’ you can seriously limit your market. But that’s exactly why we’re here. We have large vans and can collect your items within the M25 and sometimes from further out by arrangement. We also have large warehouses in which to photograph and store your goods until they’re sold, leaving you space in your shed or garage to house the new versions. And we deal with the buyer – whether that’s additional questions about the item or arranging shipping.

So if you’re venturing into your shed this weekend for the first time since October, consider whether your summer equipment is the kind of thing that would sell on eBay, then give us a call on 0800 046 1100.
