Only a year since we were sent into a buying frenzy for the iPad, the iPad 2 is set to be released in to the marketplace. This leaves us with the age-old dilemma for all gadget-lovers:- what do I do with the old one?
The obvious thing is to sell it on eBay, and we’ve done some research to help you figure out what it might be worth. Stuff U Sell regularly analyses prices in the eBay marketplace, and we’ve been looking at the sales so far this year of the 32GB WiFi-only iPad — one of the most popular models.
Market overview
Stripping out any broken or faulty items, the average selling price has been a little under £400 (£399.25) across both new and used items. However, this average masks a wide range of sales: we’ve seen sellers fetch anywhere between £250 and £550. New and boxed iPads command the highest prices, and our analysis suggests a fair market for a good condition used iPad is between £275 – £355 when sold by a private seller with good feedback. This means that after paying all the eBay and Paypal fees (around 15%) you might expect to have around £270 in your pocket.
Over the same period the average price achieved by Stuff U Sell is £419 for used machines – around 33% higher than the marketplace prices quoted above: a result of our Top Rated standing in the eBay marketplace and expertise and experience in preparing auctions. So much for the historical prices — what will happen when the new version is released? Won’t the market for the old one collapse?
It’s hard without a crystal ball to predict exactly what will happen, but we can lean on our experience with the many iPhone generations to look at comparable markets and make an estimate. The market for second-hand iPhone 3GS devices dropped from £382 to £307 across the launch period of the iPhone 4 last year: a fall of 20%.
Applying this to the iPad, we might expect to see the market drop to around £220 – £285, with private sellers netting a little over £200 in their pockets in 6 months time.
