Do Something Different

What will you be doing on 29th February? It’s a Wednesday.

Don’t just go to work, come home, eat one of the six dinners you rotate for week nights (we all do it) and wince your way through One Born Every Minute. NO! We’ve been inspired by Radio 4’s Leap for PM campaign which asks people to really take advantage of this extra day and do something special. After all, most of us say we’d do X, Y and Z if only we had the time. Well, this year we have a whole extra 24 hours – that should be enough to do plenty.

So, ideas time:

1.) (PM’s idea) Patch up a broken friendship – send an email now and ask them for coffee or a drink on the 29th. Promise both of you won’t mention the argument, you just miss each other and need to move on.

2.) Change your style – always wanted a dramatic haircut/ a tattoo / to wear colours instead of black/ to own a properly impressive designer handbag? Just do it. (Think about the tattoo very carefully, but all the others you can’t really go permanently wrong. We have loads of bags on the site right now too. And if you don’t get on with it, we can resell it for you.)

3.) Sort out your underwear drawer – it’s the declutter that keeps on giving – every morning you’ll thank yourself so much and you’ll feel great all day wearing the nice stuff you got for Christmas 2 years ago which was stuffed at the back under all the greys.

4.) Gather up all your old mobiles and chargers and sell them. (We can do that for you, so it’s an easy win plus your cupboards won’t be a tangle of old wires anymore.)

5.) Finally admit that you’re never going to squeeze into that size 8 designer outfit ever again. It’s been 25 years. Yes, it cost a small fortune and has the Vivienne Westwood label that cost you a month’s salary in 1987, but do you realise it’s now a designer piece and may even sell for more than you paid for it?

6.) Sort out your finances. MoneySavingExpert is a good starting point. It’s a boring day checking if you’ve got the best energy provider, shifting your credit onto 0% deals, finding the best car and home insurance and but it’s worth it! With the money you’ve saved in one day you could finance the fun things listed at point 2.

7.) Tackle the loft/ shed/ cupboard of doom. We all have one or all of these areas which lurk, holding stuff we don’t use and mostly have forgotten we even had. Clear one of them out and sort into boxes of keep, throw out/donate to charity, sell on. You end up with a clear idea of what you have, an inflated sense of wellbeing for donating stuff to charity and hopefully a pile of cash for the things you’ve sold.

8.) Take a massive risk and totally change your entire life. Propose marriage, resign and move to another continent, apply for an Open University course in a different field, decide now is the time to have a baby, or another baby, or to get pigs, or llamas.

9.) Make 29th February the day you give up smoking, eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, drink no alcohol, eat oily fish, go for a run, floss your teeth and go to bed at 10pm.

10.) If that’s all a bit much, here’s an easy one. Try eBay for the first time. If you’ve always been a buyer but never a seller do it this month. It’s much more fun, more profitable and warmer than doing a car boot sale, and you get a real buzz every time someone watches your item or there’s a bidding scuffle at the end. If it’s too much hassle to list it yourself, give us a ring – we do the leg work, you still get the buzz when it sells.

It’s Time To Leap Into Action

This year, there’s a double Valentine’s opportunity both for lovers and those with goods to sell that may appeal to the star-crossed.

On 29th February 2012 many women may take advantage of the old leap year tradition to propose marriage to their slow-to-commit boyfriends. Also, to avoid this happening, men who want to take charge may leap in first and propose around Valentine’s Day.

If the woman proposes, she may perhaps want to present her new fiancé with a ring or some other piece of jewellery to seal the deal. The man proposing may want to have a ring ready in his pocket too.

And whoever does the proposing, there’s a whole lot of preparation for the most romantic occasion of your life so far – a Vivienne Westwood dress or a Kenzo Homme suit perhaps, so you look your best. Then there’s a Chanel bag and Christian Louboutin shoes to go with the dress, and perhaps candelabra, appropriate romantic music and movies and something to play them on.

We’re no experts in romance or relationships, but we’re pretty good on spotting retail trends and we know that the kinds of goods that should sell well in the next three weeks include:

Designer suits and slinky dresses – the kind that make you feel good about yourself.
• Accessories to go with said outfits – designer bags like Hermes, Burberry and Gucci and shoes by names like Louboutin, Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik.
• Jewellery – specifically rings, especially solitaire diamonds, but all gemstones are popular for engagement rings these days.
• Men’s jewellery – this leap year it could be a good time to sell a Rolex watch, diamond cufflinks, men’s gold chains or rings.
• Romantic music and movie collections.
Don’t overlook other potential romantic gifts too, for those not proposing but simply looking for a Valentine’s gift:
• First or early edition books
• Romantic or erotic art
• Other jewellery, particularly watches and anything with diamonds
• Crystal or fine china vases that will hold either a single or a dozen red roses

And once all these couples are newly engaged they’re going to start planning the wedding, so if you spent a small fortune on a wedding dress by Vera Wang or Amanda Wyatt and you’re ready to turn it into cash to be used to furnish the nursery, or to fund a second honeymoon, take it to the dry cleaner’s now, so we can list it for you at the beginning of March in time for the summer wedding rush.

So happy hunting in your cupboards, drawers and attics. Let us turn something you never look at from one year to the next into a symbol of true love and devotion for someone else. Then you can treat yourself and your loved ones with the proceeds. Everyone’s a winner.
